Michael Somers’ debut novel, STARVED, tells the story about 17-year-old Nathan Thomas, a high school senior who develops anorexia and bulimia to cope with the pressures of school and home. Young Adult Novel
Nathan rebels by pretending to go along with the program at first, until his parents refuse to help in his recovery. With only his treatment team and fellow patients to rely on, Nathan comes to terms with the boy who lost himself and the young man who gains himself back, one pound at a time.
Starved should be in libraries and high schools throughout the country to help those going through an abusive household or struggling with body image (or both) … It is a powerful, well-crafted novel that deserves a high readership and accolades … The author has a rare talent for telling a story that needs to be told … This is the kind of book that changes lives.
